CD REVIEW
Sam Cornwell and John Davies:
Some Time After
Having
whetted our appetite with delightful live
performances and a 4 track EP last year Sam and
John have now followed up with a CD full of rich
and uplifting songs. From John’s
Metaphorical
‘Mountains’ to land
fill sites on the edge of town in Sam’s
‘Rag and Bone’ the
clear bright melodies and rich harmonies almost
catch the listener unawares and sweeps them into
the emotional landscape of the songs.
‘All the Riches’ is a
wonderful love song. The simple sentiment ofthe
lyric has the same qualities as McCall’s ‘The First
Time Ever’. The title track: ‘Some
Time After’ has
mythic
dimensions with the past present and future all
contained in a kind of eternal time
present.
I’ve
seen them described elsewhere as ‘silk and steel’
and from John’s sharp incisive percussive
opener
‘Let Them Know’ to
Sam’s gentle meandering take on the
traditional
’Banks of the Bann’ the CD
shows that quality.
Their
fine guitar playing, hamonies and self penned songs
make for a CD well worth listening to again and
again
Talented
local artist Sally Delany provides a memorable
cover while Photographer Cala Gunzi captures
delightfully something of the ‘mood’ of the duet in
performance.
