Thoughts as a songwriter/musician: I think for me personally, the thing I perhaps enjoy most through playing/going to various local gig nights/sessions/jam nights/whatever... I've seen a HUGE pool of talent in the West Midlands, and every now and then I'll see someone who's maybe a great songwriter or an awesome guitarist and it's pretty humbling, and without sounding cliched, kinda inspires me to play more and write more. I guess one negative is, from what I've seen personally, gigs and gig nights seem to have kinda decreased in volume and quality recently. I think we've all probably come across some promotors who maybe don't really do it for the enjoyment of music, and likewise some amazing promotors/venues who have had to close/cease music nights because of finances. But I think local music nights like the Crossroads nights/Rea River Roots nights or various nights which are run by enthusiasts/song writers/musicians for other enthusiastic songwriters/musicians are the way to go. They're always welcoming to all abilities, and you know you're going to get a good night because everyone's on the same page.
